If I had a flux capacitor with a matching DeLorean, and I go back in time and tell myself that I would one day become obsessed with country guitar playing, I would have fallen to the floor laughing.
That’s exactly what has happened. All my friends have been rolling their eyes at me with the mention of country playing. Of course, most of my friends are metal heads, so that makes sense. Both of my parents are thrilled at the idea of me playing country. They were there the night I sat as a teenager with my arms crossed and my head down at a blue grass show they had taken me to. This is especially funny because that’s one of the country styles I like the most.
One of the songs I am still working is called “Two Feet of Topsoil” by Brad Praisley. Turns out that Paisley is a monster player! Out of all the modern country artists, I enjoy Paisley the most. He plays country in a traditional way that I like. I even caught my metal head wife with one of my Paisley CDs. I don’t think her friends will ever forgive me for that.
Besides Paisley, some other country heroes of mine are Brent Mason and Jerry Donahue. Mason for the most part is know for his session work and Jerry Donahue played with the Hellecasters.
Does this mean I have forsaken my beloved metal music? No, I have way to much history with metal, but I am having blast and some flashbacks learning country.
